Once again.....Happy New Year!
I am super excited about 2017. I have a brand new project to share and I will be asking you to play a big part. I have recently embarked on a new mission.
When I began the Buildings Are Cool blog in January of 2015 I had no clue on where I wanted to take it. I have always been passionate about design and architecture and I thought the blog would be a good place to connect and share my passions. And I was right! Over the two years of blogging other passions have developed and I have become most excited about the ability to help and inspire others. The most popular and most fulfilling blogs have been articles where I share lessons learned in the field. In many cases these lessons involved my immaturity and mishaps.
I have decided that I want to take these lessons to the next level and develop a book for young architects. That's right...a book. The kind you can hold in your hand, flip the pages and collect dust. A real book. The working title for the book is:
Breaking the Box: Explode out of Architecture School to a Successful Career as an Architect
I am calling it a working title as it is still up in the air. But the subject matter is there.
I believe that architects are natural leaders with the ability to change the world. Architecture students enter the profession grossly underprepared for the realities of a career in architecture. Furthermore the industry does a poor job of fostering young talent and as a result the needs of young architects are not being met. Many are floundering or worse, leaving the profession all together. I am writing this book because I want to help the current generation of young architects bridge the gap between the academy and the profession and propel readers to a more fulfilling and successful career as an architect.
This is the fun part. The content of this book will be created by You and I.
I will be curating the lessons shared in this book from my own experiences as well as the experiences of my peers. I will also be conducting surveys, interviewing architectural professionals and gathering research to bolster my own experiences.
What about you? I will be sharing the chapters of the book through the Buildings Are Cool website. I have created this dedicated blog where the majority of the book content will be shared. I will roll out chapters on a weekly basis with many chapters being split into multiple blog posts due to length.
If this subject is of interest to you I ask that you please provide commentary. By blogging about this book, I hope to crowd source the collective knowledge of the Buildings Are Cool Nation. The blogged version will essentially be a rough draft. The final published book will mix in all of the critique received during the blog trial and become a much more polished product.
So let me have it!
I want criticism folks! Don’t hold back. I will be sharing the book not because I want a pat on the back but because I want you to rip it to shreds. I want to make the book better. And I will be forever indebted to you. So thank you in advance!
For my first favor I ask you to critique the book title. Here is a collection of book titles I am considering with my favorites at the top:
Breaking the Box!: Explode out of Architecture School to a Successful Career as an Architect.
Mind the Gap: How to Make the Leap from Architecture School to a Successful Career as an Architect.
The Millennial Architect: Rethinking a Career in Architecture.
An Architect’s Journey: The path from student to architect.
You Don’t Know Shit!: An architect’s letter to his younger self.
Wish me luck!
Is it a bad sign I don't have the title locked down? Nah.....it'll work itself out. I am giving myself 6 months to make this happen. I will share more on my writing schedule in a later post. I am excited about this new journey and again THANK YOU!
